AWC Shelter Outreach Resource Center

Parrots and other captive birds are now among the fastest growing group of displaced animals in the U.S.  Providing proper care and placement for exotic birds presents many challenges to the traditional dog-and-cat oriented shelter.

To help your shelter gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the specialized care and placement needs of exotic birds in a shelter environment, the Avian Welfare Coalition offers 4 important resources exclusively for you!

Online Avian Wellness Series

The Avian Welfare Coalition teamed up with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries to offer a series of webinars that provide training to animal care professionals on the specialized care of exotic birds.  We examine key topics for providing short-term care and securing care for birds over a lifetime.

Best practices in temporary housing, intake, handling, medical, and nutrition and other useful topics for short-term bird care within the shelter environment are among the topics covered.  We also feature Q&A forums that enable shelter personnel to directly engage with experts to get answer to their most challenging questions: bird placement, education and outreach, and legal issues related to adoption contracts and estate planning.  View all series at: http://www.avianwelfare.org/webinars

What Shelters Need to Know About Bird Rescue Organizations

Many avian entities describe themselves as a “sanctuary” or “rescue” for displaced parrots and other exotic birds.  However, the quality of avian care, ethical standards, and sustainability varies widely among these organizations.

Animal shelters looking to establish a reliable bird placement network also need to differentiate between legitimate bird welfare organizations from those exploitative, substandard operations.
